Fall FoliageZapotec Wool Rug (2x8)
"I was born to weave, academia was definitely not for me! I remember skipping school with my friends to swim in the dams and pick guavas."
"I am the youngest son in a family of weavers from Teotitlan del Valle, and I learned from my parents and brothers how to weave. I would watch them prepare the yarn, how they dyed them with natural colors, and thread them on the loom. I feel very proud to preserve this art, which my parents learned from my grandparents. My father and brothers are Novica featured artists too.
"I began weaving my own Zapotec wool rugs when I finished middle school and since then I've been in different exhibitions and art fairs in Oaxaca and throughout the country. The recognition and congratulations I have received from clients and friends has been amazing!
"What I enjoy most about weaving is the creative aspect: from designing a rug to weaving it. I wove my first rug when I was 13 years old and I remember my father being so pleased with it that he didn't hesitate taking it with him to sell. In 1966 I started my own workshop and my wool products have traveled beyond Mexico's frontiers. I combine natural elements, like flowers, plants, seeds and tree bark when I prepare the dyes I'll use for a specific design I use lime and salt to fix the colors. I recycle the remaining water so I get different shades of a particular color.
"I describe my work as unique and admirable – I love what I do! The culture and natural environment of Oaxaca inspire me. But it was a great challenge to break away and start on my own, trying to be an independent weaver with my own designs, colors, etc.
"I was born to weave, academia was definitely not for me! I remember skipping school with my friends to swim in the dams and pick guavas. Nowadays I love playing with my children and together we are planting trees. If I have the time, I do like to read.
"My thanks go to Novica customers for your interest in our hand-woven items. I will never stop creating new designs and color combinations, which I hope you'll like. I am happy to be to count on Novica to exhibit my rugs to the whole world."

I purchased two rugs (Glowing Embers) and I was amazed at the beauty and quality. They are now suspended over our bed, one for me, and one for my wife. Mr. Ruiz, we go to sleep and wake up to your artistry every night and day. Thank you for blessing our home. SS

Gregorio Ruiz's rug is beautiful! So what am I doing here? I'm buying another one! It will live in my new home in Colorado. Thank you, Mr. Ruiz!
As we expected, the little rug is beautiful, perfect for the spot it is needed, and soft to walk on. Thank you.
I just received my ""May Flowers"" Zapotec wool rug. It is so beautiful! I love it! The colors blend so well with the other colors in my house. Thank you for such a beautiful, well made rug! Barb
I admire the quality and rich, deep colors in this rug. It is the finest piece in the room where we have placed it and it adds a warmth to the room that exceeds my expectations from this rug. Thank you.
My first Novica purchase was a large 'Danza de Colores' area rug from Señor Ruiz. I'm absolutely amazed by the unobtrusive, yet wonderful design, the beautiful selection and arrangement of colors and the excellent craftsmanship. The rug has only been in my home for a few days yet, but already it has grown close to my heart, and already it feels like it's been in its place forever. Novica's fast service and the more than reasonable shipping costs to Germany also helped to make this an extremely pleasant transaction in every aspect.
Rich colours and high quality weaving. Thank you so much for enhancing our home!
Just received my Glowing Embers rug by Gregory Ruiz. It's a beautiful piece. We were in Oaxaca a number of years ago and had purchased some rugs there…we needed one more that was complementary and of the same high quality and this rug is it. Rich earthy colors, tightly woven, and beautiful soft wool. So glad Novica provides a place for the Oaxacan artisans. I wasn't surprised that the rug was as nice as it is…but you did manage to surprise me on the gorgeous packaging. The rug came beautifully wrapped in paper with a raffia bow and ornamental bead touches in addition to a card about the artist. Great presentation. Great products. Thank you. I'll come be coming back.
